ROOTED Editorial Series
Lessons from Nature, Culture & Filipino Martial Arts
Words carry meaning. Practice gives them life.
ROOTED is a monthly reflection from Kali Method L.A. exploring Filipino language, culture, nature, and martial arts through words that invite us to look more deeply at how we train, serve, connect, and live.
Each reflection begins with a Filipino word and a simple question:
What can this word teach us about becoming more grounded, capable, and connected human beings?
Rooted in Culture. Expressed Through Practice.
Filipino Martial Arts is more than a collection of techniques.
Within its practice are relationships between teacher and student, individual and community, tradition and adaptation, strength and responsibility.
Nature often reflects these same relationships.
Through ROOTED, we explore Filipino words that give language to these ideas—from ugat (roots) and lakas (strength) to kapwa (shared humanity), kalinga (care), and ginhawa (flourishing).
These are not simply words to define.
They are ideas to practice.

ᜂᜄᜆ᜔ = Ugat
ugat = the root from which strength and identity grow; a symbol of remaining grounded in ancestry, culture, nature, and one's deepest values.
Look at a strong tree and much of what keeps it standing cannot be seen.
Beneath the surface, its roots provide stability, nourishment, and connection to the earth. There is a lesson here for martial arts—and for life.
